Lake City Information
Devils Lake was originally known as Creelsburgh on its foundation in 1882 before adopting its present name two years later. It was incorporated as a city in 1887.
The name derives from the nearby lake, which was known by the Indian name of Mini-waukan which was then mistranslated into English as "bad spirit".
The city lies on the main route between Grand Forks and Minot and is a major center for outdoor and nature tourism.
