Fargo Business
Much of Fargo's history is tied to its commercial development. The foundation of the town itself came from land speculation on where the railroad would cross the Red River of the North and its role as a transportation and business hub for homesteading and the later bonanza farm boom led to expansion in the area.
The municipal area has expanded massively over the decades and, despite still being a center for the surrounding region, Fargo and West Fargo boast major manufacturers and an important medical, educational and public sector. The MeritCare Health System, based in Fargo, is the largest private employer in North Dakota.
