Grand
Forks Business
Grand Forks was another settlement in eastern North Dakota which saw its foundations as part of railroad expansion and agricultural settlement. It became the focus for the local area because of the transport and marketing functions for the surrounding rural region.
In the 20th century the focus changed somewhat towards publicly-funded employment with the two most important being the University of North Dakota and the nearby Grand Forks Air Force Base. The public and private health system are also major employers in the area.
Strenuous efforts have been made and are continuing to rejuvenate the downtown area of Grand Forks, especially following the severe flooding in 1997.
The wages in the Grand Forks area are slightly below the state average at $28,364, according to 2004 statistics.
