City Information
Wahpeton, like other settlements on North Dakota's eastern border, shares close links with its neighbor across the state line in Minnesota - in this case, the town of Breckenridge.
Wahpeton has gone through a couple of changes of name since it was originally founded in 1869. Originally titled Richville and then Chahinkpapa, it chose the present name in 1874. Wahpeton comes from a Sioux phrase which means "dweller among the leaves", signifying the town's place at the edge of the eastern forest and the start of the plains.
It became a city in 1884 and is the county seat. It is the focus of business for the surrounding farms and agricultural communities, but also has an important role as a manufacturing center.
