Adams
County
Like
some neighbours, Adams
County was created in the 1880s but wasn't officially organized until later
due to lack of population, in Adams' case in 1907.
It was named after a railroad executive who was a distant relative of John Quincy Adams, the sixth US president, and not, as some sources have it, after the president himself.
The county is just under 1,000 square miles in size and has a population of 2,343, according to the last census. The number of inhabitants has declined by about 20% in the last decade recorded by the census. The highest number of inhabitants recorded in Adams County was in the 1930s, when around 6,300 people lived there.
The county seat of Adams County is Hettinger, ND, which is not to be confused with Hettinger County to the north.
Adams County is surrounded by Hettinger County to the north, by Grant County and Sioux County to the east, by South Dakota to the south and by Bowman County to the west.
