County
Golden
Valley
County was created at the relatively late time of 1912, when it was separated
from its neighbouring Billings County after a referendum.
The name was seen at the time as more of a marketing tactic than a descriptive term (most of the county is actually located on a high plateau) and also matched the name of a major livestock company in the region.
The county is just over 1,000 square miles in size and has a population of 1,680, according to the last census. The number of inhabitants has fallen by more than 20% since 1980.
The highest population in Golden Valley county was measured in 1920, when over 4,800 people lived here. The county seat of Golden Valley County is Beach, ND, which was given that position on creation of the county.
Golden Valley County is surrounded by McKenzie County to the north, by Billings County to the east, by Slope County to the south and by Montana to the west.
