Slope
County
Slope
County was another county in North Dakota created at a relatively
late time due to voter pressure. Like its neighbour Golden
Valley County,
it was separated from Billings County to the north after a referendum,
this time two years later.
The name of Slope County comes from the situation on the geological formation known as the Missouri Slope.
The county is just over 1,200 square miles in size and has a population of 767, according to the last census. The number of inhabitants, which has fallen by a third since 1980, was forecast to decline further to just over 700 in 2005. Slope County is the least populated county in North Dakota.
The highest population in Slope County was measured in 1920, when over 4,940 people lived here. The county seat of Slope County is Amidon, ND, which was given that position on creation of the county. Amidon is the smallest county seat in the nation with only 26 inhabitants. The larger town of Marmarth is located in the southwest of Slope County and has 140 people living there.
