Wahpeton Business
Wahpeton developed as a frontier town and its first job was to serve the homesteaders and settlers who were flooding into the open pastures further west and north.
As the wave of expansion moved further away from the town it settled down into its role as an administrative center for the surrounding rich farmland region and as a transportation hub via the river and railroad.
As the county seat Wahpeton still enjoys this hub status, but it is also quite an important manufacturing center. The wages are slightly above the state average at $29,503, according to 2004 statistics.
