Burke County ND

Burke County InformationBurke County

Burke CountyBurke County was originally part of Ward County until it was split off in 1910.

The Burke in the county name is John Burke, once the North Dakota Governor and a US Treasurer.

The county is just over 1,100 square miles in size and has a population of 1,968, according to the last census. The population has fallen dramatically since its high point of nearly 10,000 in the 1930s. In the last 10 years, the population plummeted by over 12 per cent and the county is considered a prime example of rural depopulation.

The county seat is the city of Bowbells, which is located in the eastern part of the county. It has a population of 336.

Burke County is surrounded by Canada to the north, by Renville County and Ward County to the east, by Mountrail County to the south and by Williams County and Divide County to the west.
