Religion
in North Dakota
Christian missionaries from many faiths moved into the state in the early days of settlement, with the Catholic priests concentrating hard on the Red River valley area and the méti and Indian villages.
Protestant pastors were more popular in the areas populated by immigrant families bringing their faith from the European home, so Scandinavian and Germanic forms of Lutheranism took a strong hold in North Dakota.
The Catholic faith and varying forms of Lutheranism remain the most popular religions observed in the state, which has the highest proportion of inhabitants who identify themselves as religious.
