McKenzie
County
McKenzie County was created in 1905 and is the largest county by size in the state. As one of the most westerly in North Dakota it was one of the last to be officially recognised
McKenzie County is named an infamous "machine" politician in the North Dakota of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alexander McKenzie.
The county is just over 2,860 square miles in size and has a population of 6,360, according to the last census. The number of inhabitants has remained fairly stable over the last decade, even though it is a largely rural county, with large areas in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park or the Little Missouri National Grassland. One of the reasons for that is the growth of the mining and energy industry in the area.
The county seat of McKenzie County is Watford City. Originally the title belonged to Alexander (named after the same politician) then, amidst some controversy, it became Schafer. Watford City was only voted the county seat in 1940.
McKenzie County is surrounded by Williams County to the north, by Mountrail County and Dunn County to the east, by Billings County and Golden Valley County to the south and by Montana to the west.
