Bismarck-Mandan ND
Bismarck-Mandan
City Information
Bismarck was founded as a railroad town in 1872 and received its current name a year later to entice German investors in the railroad (Otto von Bismarck was Chancellor of Germany at the time).
The town was made the capital of the Dakota Territory in 1883 and continued in the role with the statehood of North Dakota.
Mandan, on the other side of the Missouri River, was founded at a similar time, but only became known by the present name in 1879 (previous names for the settlement were Morton and Lincoln). The name stems from a tribal name Mantahni, the "people of the riverbank".
A bridge was built over the Missouri in 1883, finally and permanently joining the east and west sides of the river.
The Bismarck-Mandan area now boasts nearly 75,000 inhabitants and, as well as acting as the state capital, is also an important transportation hub, medical center and has a flourishing energy industry.
