City Information
Jamestown was founded in 1871 as a settlement near the army camp of Fort Seward, which guarded an important river crossing. It is another railroad town in North Dakota and served as the repair yards for the NPRR.
Named after an army general's hometown in Virginia rather than the nearby James River, it developed into a city just over a decade later and attempted to become the state capital.
Hometown of western author Louis L'Amour it has promoted itself under several guises (such as "The City Beautiful" and currently "The Pride of the Prairie") but is commonly known as the Buffalo City.
The city plays host to Jamestown College and the North Dakota State Hospital.
