Fargo
City Information
Fargo is one of the eastern North Dakota cities which shares a metropolitan area with a city across the state boundary in Minnesota - in this case, Moorhead. But Fargo, as North Dakota's most urban area, has also expanded to the west and a separate city, West Fargo, is also part of the built-up area.
Fargo was founded in the fertile Red River of the North Valley and steamships ran downriver to connect the early towns. It was originally the place where the northern railroad crossed the state line and continued westwards and was the focus of much land speculation at its foundation.
Fargo was founded in 1871, named Centralia at first and then by its present name to honor William Fargo, one of the founders of Wells Fargo. It became a city in 1875 and the administrative and commercial center for eastern North Dakota.
The metropolitan area has grown rapidly over the decades but retains the attributes which prompt it to be consistently nominated as one of the best cities to live in the USA.
West Fargo originally grew up around the Armour packing plant and was incorporated as a village in 1931. However the current city of West Fargo was only created in 1967 when the area of South West Fargo took the name (the former West Fargo becoming known as West Fargo Industrial Park and later Riverside). West Fargo has also grown rapidly and, on its own, is in the top eight cities in terms of population in the state.
The municipal area of Fargo-Moorhead and West Fargo now contain around 200,000 inhabitants.
