Dickinson
City Information
Dickinson was founded in 1880 and was initially known as Pleasant Valley Siding before changing its name to Dickinson in reference to a politician and land agent. The impulse for the settlement was the building of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the western part of the state.
It was known as the "Queen of the Prairie" since its lights could be seen for miles over the flatlands.
Dickinson became a city at the start of the 20th century and has become the major commercial center for the southwest corner of North Dakota. The town has grown into an important tourism center, especially with the proximity of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
